DEVASTATING SOCIAL ISOLATION
Brighton Journal – about Rachel Hinks from UK
This case details the severe socio-economic impact of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) on a therapist from West Sussex.
She reported developing violent shaking, burning rashes, severe head pains, and disorientation, symptoms she links to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from Wi-Fi signals and phone masts (specifically a jump from 2G to 4G). This crippling reaction to modern technology forced her to make drastic life changes.
Unable to tolerate the EMF exposure in her rented home, she was compelled to give up her job and residence of 17 years and move into a rudimentary shed located far from signal hubs. This retreat to a state of near-hermitage demonstrates the extreme measures individuals must take to manage severe environmental intolerances.
WHEN WIRELESS HURTS
Frontiers in Public Health – about David Ashton from UK
The author describes a long history of chronic symptoms — headaches, dizziness, fatigue and neurological issues — that appeared after prolonged exposure to wireless technologies. Despite standard medical testing revealing no cause, the symptoms persisted until the author significantly reduced his exposure to EMF and noted substantial improvement.
WHY DOCTORS ARE WRONG
Open letter by Lydia Morel-Bétermin from France
In her letter, she explains that symptoms such as migraines, dizziness, neurological disturbances, and sleep problems force her to avoid many everyday environments. She emphasizes that the condition is disabling, poorly recognized by authorities, and urgently requires appropriate medical and societal support.
NEAR 5G BASE STATIONS
A case study in Stockholm, Sweden
A previously healthy worker developed multiple symptoms — including headaches, dizziness, memory loss, fatigue and insomnia — after being exposed to elevated levels of radiofrequency (RF) and extremely-low-frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields in an office near mobile-phone base stations; many symptoms subsided when the individual was away from the exposure, suggesting a possible link between high RF/ELF radiation and electromagnetic hypersensitivity.
WOMAN IN A FOREST
La Depeche – about Nadiane from France
A 60-year-old woman developed severe electrosensitivity and retreated to live in a simple cabin on her 13-hectare forest property to escape wireless radiation. She has been acquitted by the court in Carcassonne; the judge ruled the case closed, allowing her to stay, though lawyers admit the cabin is a difficult long-term solution.
TEACHER’S LIFE DEVASTATED BY ELECTROSENSITIVITY AND MCS
The illness of Alessandra (Italian, born 1952, a former teacher) began in 2005 with neurological symptoms (paraesthesia, weakness, and tachycardia), later evolving into debilitating EHS. Key symptoms include violent internal tremors, sudden loss of strength, chest pain, muscle rigidity, and vertigo, all acutely triggered by electromagnetic sources. A high-power UMTS base station near her home was initially identified as the primary source, compelling her to sleep in her garage or a farmhouse for relief.
The non-recognition of her condition forced profound isolation: she relinquished teaching for administrative duties, avoiding numerous wireless antennas and electronic devices in the workplace. At home, she must distance herself from all appliances (even the refrigerator) and utilize extensive shielding measures (e.g., thick walls, protective gloves, foil on TV speakers).
Compounding her EHS is a worsening MCS, triggered by chemicals like perfumes, paints, and car exhaust, causing suffocation and severe headaches. Her blood analysis showed an abnormal brick-red colour and red blood cell stacking (Rouleaux formation) during episodes of severe malaise.
The case underscores a catastrophic failure of social support: she was denied early retirement, and her 20-year-old son is started exhibiting similar, albeit milder, symptoms with both showing low ionized calcium. Alessandra’s ongoing struggle for environmental safety and functional daily life is a powerful illustration of why EHS and MCS must be formally acknowledged as legitimate disabilities across the European Union.
A CASE OF ‘ALLERGY TO MODERNITY’ IN ITALY
This case from Italy underscores the crisis of non-recognition for severe environmental illnesses, often termed ‘Allergy to Modernity’, Idiopathic Environmental Intolerances (I-EI), including Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and Electrosensitivity (EHS).
The individual case reports a citizen suffering from a profoundly disabling condition triggered by common modern environmental factors, such as chemical fragrances, pesticides, and electromagnetic fields. The severity of the symptoms—which can range from neurological distress and respiratory collapse to chronic pain—has effectively forced the person into social and geographical isolation, often in remote areas, to avoid ubiquitous triggers.
Systemic failure to acknowledge the condition as a legitimate disability denies the affected person essential state support, including medical care, adaptive housing, and economic benefits.
SEVERE ELECTROSENSITIVITY AND THE CRISIS OF SOCIAL EXCLUSION
This case highlights the catastrophic impact of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS), or Electrosensitivity, on a British citizen, an ex-nurse. The 50-year-old woman claims a severe, painful “allergy” to invisible environmental triggers, specifically electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by common modern devices, including mobile phones, Wi-Fi, and TV signals.
The gravity of her condition—which she describes as causing extreme physical distress—has forced her into severe isolation. She is reportedly unable to leave her home, effectively rendered a prisoner within her own residence to manage symptoms.
This case is a stark example of how the lack of formal, unified recognition of EHS across European disability frameworks leads to profound social exclusion and the denial of fundamental human rights. Non-recognition prevents her from accessing necessary state support, medical treatment, and reasonable accommodation, turning an environmental health issue into a debilitating disability rights violation.
