Working Group Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary mission of our group is to obtain formal recognition of <strong>Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS)<\/strong> within the WHO&#8217;s <strong>International Classification of Diseases (ICD)<\/strong>. This objective is fundamental to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Guarantee healthcare rights:<\/strong> Allowing patients to access adequate diagnosis, therapy, and medical support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social and legal protection:<\/strong> Providing a legal basis for disability recognition and obtaining reasonable accommodations in the workplace and at home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u00abBottom-Up\u00bb Strategy:<\/strong> Rather than aiming solely for \u00abtop-down\u00bb recognition (which is often ignored), our strategy aims to insert <strong>\u00abchild-codes\u00bb<\/strong> linked to specific symptoms caused by exposure to <strong>electromagnetic fields<\/strong> into the digital ICD-11 system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Achievements (2022 \u2013 2025)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past years, this WG has worked intensely to build a European network and test the WHO&#8217;s mechanisms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Submission of the first proposal:<\/strong> In May 2022, a \u00abchild-code\u00bb proposal was submitted within the category <strong>\u00abOther specified disorders of the nervous system\u00bb<\/strong> (code 8E4Y). <br><a href=\"https:\/\/icd.who.int\/dev11\/proposals\/f\/icd\/en#\/http:\/\/id.who.int\/icd\/entity\/988657115?readOnly=true&amp;action=AddNewEntityProposal&amp;stableProposalGroupId=6900ed2e-a193-49c0-b58e-4c294615991c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The link to the proposal<\/a> is visible after login. It was rejected by the WHO Secretariat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Creation of an expert network:<\/strong> We have consolidated collaboration among various European NGOs (Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark) and involved expert physicians.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sharing diagnostic tools:<\/strong> Clinical protocols and experimental questionnaires for EHS have been shared among group members to standardize the diagnostic approach.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Secondary Headache Proposal:<\/strong> In November 2025, a child-code was proposed under the <strong>Secondary Headache<\/strong> classification. The reception of this request is currently being followed, with the subsequent expected \u00abaudit\u00bb by two appointed researchers. <br><a href=\"https:\/\/icd.who.int\/dev11\/proposals\/f\/icd\/en#\/http:\/\/id.who.int\/icd\/entity\/296971178?readOnly=true&amp;action=AddNewEntityProposal&amp;stableProposalGroupId=936627ff-afc5-40ab-ba15-d7368db0c158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The link to the proposal<\/a> is visible after login. Challenges and Lessons Learned<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April 2024, we received notification that our initial proposal was rejected by WHO reviewers (Professors Treede and Woolf). Analyzing this rejection allowed us to understand that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The reviewers&#8217; focus was excessively placed on the term \u00abEHS\u00bb rather than on the direct <strong>causal link between <strong>electromagnetic fields<\/strong> and the nervous system<\/strong> that we had documented.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More stringent scientific documentation and a selection of the most recent studies are necessary to overcome academic scepticism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Future Program and Next Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WG continues its efforts with the following actions planned for the near future:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preparation of new cases:<\/strong> We are documenting the experience of the first rejection to build more robust proposals, precisely identifying symptoms that warrant a dedicated code. Following the headache proposal, documentation for <strong>tinnitus<\/strong> is being prepared for submission in March. Subsequently, the ICD-11 WG team will evaluate which other symptoms to propose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>New scientific involvement:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/esc-info.eu\/lets-get-who-to-recognise-ehs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">We will identify a team<\/a> of internationally renowned scientists and physicians to review our drafts before launching them into the ICD system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Constant monitoring:<\/strong> All WG members will register in the ICD proposal system to actively monitor and support each new instance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Multi-level Collaboration:<\/strong> We will continue lobbying the WHO in parallel with national actions for the recognition of the condition as a disability and a <strong>functional impairment<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
