EMF on Cars

The analysis and measurement of the cars was created by Francesco Filippi.

Meters

Radio Frequency meter
Safe & Sound Pro 2 (200Mhz – 8 Ghz)

Magnetic meter
AC Milligaus Meter UHS2

Volt meter
Asita MD214

To use the voltmeter I grounded it with a 30 cm
long screwdriver into a wet ground.

Possible Safe Levels to Consider

Radio Frequencies = 1 microWatt per square meter (μW/m²)
Magnetic Field = 0,1 Milligaus (mG)
Electric Field = 0,1 Volt on skin

Notes

  • I am not a certified technician. I am a EHS person who has learned to use this meters.
  • I have measured the EMF pollution received on the driving seat.
  • Every EHS person is different and can accuse symptoms even below the recommended
    values. So I can not guarantee that a car is safe or toxic for everybody.

FIAT PUNTO 2007 – 1400 petrol

RF = 0 μW/m²
MF = 0,18 mG (0,8 at feet level)
EF = 0,007 V

Comment
Simply the best.

NISSAN MICRA 2006 – 1240 petrol

RF = 0 μW/m²
MF = 0,28 mG
EF = 0,017 V

Comment
Good old safe little car.

FIAT PANDA 2008 – 1200 methane + petrol

RF = 0 μW/m²
MF = 0,24 mG (1,3 at feet level)
EF = 0,066 V

Comment
There is just a little magnetic field when the engine is on, but it might be bearable even if you are EHS. No radio frequencies.

FORD FOCUS SW 2013 – 1600 LPG + petrol

RF = 0 μW/m²
MF = 0,5 mG
EF = 0,12 V

Comment
It’s my car and I feel good on it.
All the values are acceptably low.

I have pushed the balance of the speakers all to the right, so to reduce the magnetic field that my legs receive from the left speaker (0,8 mG instead of 1,2 mG). On the dashboard there is just a tiny display.

CITROEN C3 2013 – 1300 petrol

RF = 0 μW/m²
MF = 1 mG
EF = 0,015 V

Comment
There is just a little magnetic field when the engine is on, but it might be bearable even if you are EHS. No radio frequencies.

WOLKSWAGEN TOURAN ECOFUEL 2003 – 2000 methane + petrol

RF = about 30 μW/m² for half of the time
MF = 0,8 mG (2,6 at feet level)
EF = 0,015 V

Comment
There are small radio frequencies produced when the engine is on; 30 μW/m² can be tolerable for many EHS people. The magnetic field is decent at steering wheel level, higher at feet level, but maybe tolerable.
This car is not perfect, but surely not so bad.

WOLKSWAGEN TOURAN ECOFUEL 2021 –
1000 turbo LPG + petrol

RF = 3-30 μW/m²
MF = 0,7 mG (1,8 at feet level)
EF = 0,010 V

Comment
You can switch off the Bluetooth and the data transmission. Despite, this, there are small radio frequencies produced when the engine is on,
tolerable for many EHS people. They don’t make any difference when driving in a town or on a highway. Further more, every time you switch off the engine, you receive peak up to 70.000 for four seconds.
Disappointing detail, but tolerable. If you are searching for a pretty safe modern car, this is surely an option to consider.

DACIA DUSTER 2018 – DIESEL 1600

RF = 0
MF = 1 mG (3-5 at feet level)
EF = 0,25 V

Comment
There is not a button to switch the Bluetooth off, but it goes off automatically when there are no Bluetooth devices on board. The magnetic field is high at the feet level, but acceptable at the steering wheel level. This car is not perfect, but it could be safe enough.

.

FIAT TOPOLINO 2024 – full electric minicar

RF = 0 μW/m²
MF = up to 6,5 mG at maximum speed (45 km/h)
EF = 0,5 V (at 20 km/h)

Comment
I could not measure the electric field at full speed.
The magnetic field depends on the speed. At 20 or 30 km/h the mG is about 3 mG, so for short trips in the traffic, this cheap car could be an option when you can not use a bicycle.

FIAT CUBO 2013 – 1400 methane + petrol

RF = 450 μW/m²
MF = 0,3 mG (0,85 at feet level)
EF = 0,005 V

Comment
It could be a safe car, but every 50 seconds you receive 4 seconds of about 450 μW/m² from the blue tooth device. You can not disable it, but maybe an auto-electrician knows how to put it out of order.

MINI COOPER 2019 – 2000 diesel

RF = 0 μW/m² (when the Bluetooth is off)
MF = 3,5 mG
EF = 0,053 V

Comment
You can switch off the Bluetooth and turn off the big display. Unfortunately there is a quite big magnetic field, that makes this car not recommended. Rear seats might be quite safe for a short trip.

.

FIAT 500L Sport 2021 – 1800 petrol

RF = 8000-15.000 μW/m²
MF = not recorded
EF = not recorded

Comment
You can not turn the powerful Bluetooth off.
If there is a way to do it, it’s very well hidden.
You can stay in this car only when everything is off.
