Abuse of the good name of Ramazzini
ESC asked the Ramazzini Institute in a letter (see below) to distance itself from the recent report ‘Recent Research on EMF and Health Risk, Eighteenth Report from SSM’s Scientific Council on Electromagnetic Fields, 2023’ published by the Swedish radiation protection organisation SSM.
This non-peer reviewed study undermines the scientific findings of a research project conducted by Ramazzini over more than a decade on the biological effects of EMFs on mammals. ICNIRP, which is known to recognise only the thermal effects of radiation, is widely represented in SSM.
The report appears to have been signed amongst others by Ramazzini’s research director Dr. Mandrioli, but his name was included without his knowledge. Mandrioli was invited by SSM to participate as an expert in the SSM Scientific Council. As he didn’t agree with the scientific contents in this report he resigned.
Immediately after they became aware of the unauthorised use of Dr. Mandrioli’s name the Ramazzini Institute took appropriate actions and says “We have already asked SSM for the immediate correction of this error and the publication of a “corrigendum” and we will make sure this happens as soon as possible.”

Dr. Loretta Masotti President of Istituto Ramazzini
Dr. Marco Benni CEO
Subject: Participation of Daniele Mandrioli in SSM report
Brussels, 12-12-2024
Dear Dr. Loretta Masotti and Dr. Marco Benni,
It is with great dismay that we learn that the Ramazzini Institute, on behalf of its research centre director, Daniele Mandrioli, has participated in the publication of the Swedish Radiation Safety Autority (SSM) report (non-peer reviewed) on recent research on electromagnetic fields and health risks, the conclusions of which belittle and deny the clear scientific research of laboratory studies on animals or epidemiological studies on humans.
Our association has always believed in the objective and free research carried out over the years by your prestigious and globally recognised institute, even going so far as to finance an important experimental study in the field of radiofrequency-related animal carcinogenesis.
We want to continue to believe in the mission that has animated and animates the Ramazzini Institute.
We therefore ask for a retraction by your research director of what is stated in this report.
With Kind Regard,
Rob van der Boom,
Chairman ESC
